ISCC certificate awarded to BioMCN

BioMCN and SABIC ensure the sustainability of biofuels through ISCC Certification. A first for DEKRA certification, which grants its first Dutch ISCC DEKRA certificate for sustainable biofuels. The Netherlands, 1 September, 2011 – Bio-methanol producer BioMCN, together with petrochemical company SABIC - producer of bio-MTBE1 -, made an important step towards the certification of second generation biofuels made from residues2. With the conferment of the International Sustainability and Carbon Certification (ISCC), both companies show that they are front runners towards an ambitious Dutch biofuel policy.
For the first time in the Netherlands, successive biofuel companies within the same supply chain have been certified simultaneously in the field of sustainability. The certification process was conducted by DEKRA Germany.
Earlier this year, the Netherlands implemented the ‘European Renewable Energy Directive’ (RED), which describes the EU sustainability requirements for biofuels. Based on this directive, current legislation on sustainability requirements obligate a minimal savings of CO2 emission (of 35%, rising to 60% CO2 reduction in 2018) and stimulate the production of second generation biofuels.
Recently, the European Committee approved seven systems for the certification of sustainable biomass and bio-energy, including ISCC, which demonstrate that biofuels meet the criteria of the Renewable Energy Directive.
SABIC’s Business Manager C4’s and Oxygenates Europe, Jaco Boelhouwer, says: “In addition to CO2 reduction and durable land management, ISCC is also looking into social sustainability. Also, ISCC is an international system for all types of biomass and biofuels. It simplifies national and international trade. Therefore, in close consultation with BioMCN, ISCC was a logical choice for us. Our product bio-MTBE is now an EU accepted, sustainable biofuel, and SABIC can deliver this second generation biofuel everywhere in Europe.”
DEKRA Sales Manager Eric Evers: “The certification of sustainable biofuels is an important priority in our growth strategy. DEKRA has extensive experience in ISCC auditing, particularly in Germany, but this is the first ISCC-certification for the Dutch market. We are proud to be able to grant this to BioMCN and SABIC.”
Rob Voncken, CEO BioMCN: “We are very pleased with receiving the ISCC-certification because we value transparency in our production process and the sustainability of biofuels. Through certification, our industry can demonstrate their sense of responsibility in achieving the international sustainable biomass objectives. By means of this ISCC certification BioMCN contributes to an ambitious biofuel policy in the Netherlands.”
Earlier this week, an alliance within the Dutch biofuel industry announced its cooperation to further stimulate an ambitious and sustainable Dutch biofuels policy. The alliance stated in a letter to the members of Parliament, that the introduction of statutory sustainability criteria and internationally recognized certification schemes allows the Dutch government to return to the original growth path for biofuels to reach the European 10 % blending objective by 2020.

1 Renewable Energy Directive (2009/28/EG), Art. 21(2).
For the purposes of demonstrating compliance with national renewable energy obligations placed on operators and the target for the use of energy from renewable sources in all forms of transport referred to in Article 3(4), the contribution made by biofuels produced from wastes, residues, non-food cellulosic material, and ligno-cellulosic material shall be considered to be twice that made by other biofuels.
